This island is worldwide known given the historical prison ruins of the 19th Century and the community of Giant Aldabra Tortoises originally from Seychelles that arrived to the island in the 1920s.

A very high standard hotel has been built on the island, with 27 sea view rooms (15 deluxe cottages and 12 standard rooms) located in the back side of the island, where day visitors have no access, 2 restaurants (both located in the 19th century buildings: the prison ruins and the Mathews’ restaurant) and 4 bars; fresh water swimming pool, tennis court and generator to supply electricity. Rooms are colorfully decorated in Swahili style, with “kikoys” (traditional fishermen’ clothes), with spacious interiors; the deluxe rooms offer bathtub plus shower, whilst standard rooms have only shower but no bathtub. There is no ac, no tv, no phone. These items serve no purpose here. The rooms are by the sea, so there is cooling sea breeze day and night, and the place is designed to help you forget about tide agendas and relax!!! Main meal plan is HB, with possibilty of FB as well.
