UGANDA GAME PARKS

NAH-NPU OO1: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park boasts of one of the highest biodiversity ratings of any game park or reserve in the world – almost 100mammals species and 600 bird species. Elephants, hippos, the elusive giant forest hog, the Uganda kob and the famed tree-climbing lions, among others are found here. The park is 6 hours drive from Kampala though Mbarara. Activities include game viewing and launch trips.

Accommodation: Two upmarket lodges, budget hostel and campsite.

NAH-NPU OO2: Semliki National Park:

This is an extension of the vast Ituri rain forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is situated in the Semliki valley in the remote corner of the extreme west of Uganda in Bundibugyo district. Named after the Semliki river that forms the Uganda border with DR Congo, it is 300km; an approximately 4-5 hours drive from Kampala via Fort portal and Mubende. Activities include primate, bird and scenery viewing, and has a wide range of mammals –from the elephants and chimps to de Brazza’s monkey and pygmy antelopes.

Accommodation: budget lodging at nearby Bundibugyo. No camping facilities within the park

NAH-NPU OO3: Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Located in western Uganda, the 120sq km Rwenzori chain is regarded to be the legendary snow-capped mountains of the moon described by Ptolemy in AD 150. Reaching an elevation of 5109 metres, it is also Africa’s tallest mountain range, exceeded in altitude only by the freestanding Mt. Kilimanjaro and mt. Kenya. You can trek the central circuit in about seven days. The Park offers unique experience of Afro-montane rainforest. It is 25kmfrom kasese town.

Accommodation: Huts at 5 or 6 camping points at the trailhead

NAH-NPU OO4: Mt. Elgon National Park

Mt. Elgon, an extinct volcano, located in eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya. It is the 4th highest mountain in East Africa and many tourists find it an exciting alternative to some of the strenuous climbs I the region. The park can be reached3-4 hours from Kampala through Mbale. Spectacular scenery is the main attraction but there are variety of forest monkeys, antelope, elephants and buffalo. Other attractions include ancient cave painting, spectacular caves and crater with hot spring.

Accommodation: upmarket and budget lodge at Sipi Falls, hotels ion Mbale, bandas and camping within the park.

NAH-NPU OO5: Kidepo Valley National Parks

Isolated from mainstream Uganda by the harsh plains north of Mt. Elgon, Kidepo is one of Africa’s last wilderness areas. It harbors a great number of animals species (66), 28 of them found nowhere else in the country. Activities include game viewing, bird watching, hiking and cultural performers. But it is the thrilling sense of isolation that distinguishes this rare slice of wild Africa as yet undiscovered by the mass safari market. It is 810km from Kampala and can be reached by road and air.

Accommodation: lodge in the park and UWA rest camp and campsite.

NAH-NPU OO6: Lake Mburo National Park

Covered by extensive acacia woodland, Mburo has a markedly different fauna from other parks and reserves. Named after Lake Mburo, the park is 230km (three –and-a-four hours drive) from Kampala on the Mbarara highway. It is the best place to see the gigantic eland antelope as well as zebra, topi and impala, crocodiles and a variety of water birds.

Accommodation: In luxury tented camp, UWA rest camp and campsite.

NAH-NPU OO7: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi impenetrable Forest National park, located in southwestern Uganda, is home to half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. It is famous for gorilla tracking. The park is 534km from Kabale or Rukungiri by private or public road transport. The drive takes 9-10 hours. Charter flights can however be arranged to Kayonza Airstrip.

Accommodation: four up market camps, a homestead, community run budget rooms and camping is available near the Buhoma entrance gate.

NAH-NPU OO8: Mgahinga National Park

Located in the extreme southwestern Uganda that borders DR Congo and Rwanda, Mgahinga park covers 33.7sqkm. it is 510km (9 hours drive) from Kampala through kabale. Mountain gorilla tracking is the majority activity. Small populations of elephant, leopard, buffalo, the black and white colobus monkey and at least 12 birds species are found here. But the spectacular setting at the base of the volcanoes, the tallest of which reaches 4,507m, is among the most stirring in east Africa.

Accommodation: up market lodge in Kisoro town, community run bandas and camping.

NAH-NPU OO9: Kibale Forest National Park

Located in western Uganda, Kibale park is 322km (6 hours drive) from Kampala. It can be reached by road either through Fort portal or Kasese. Kibale is home to 13 primate species, best of all the chimpanzee -mans closest relative. Other activities include bird watching and nature walks.
