Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city and the chief port of East Africa. Despite its size, it has a relaxed atmosphere with many wide streets and open spaces. Along the previously- busy dhow harbor in the old town section of the city, however, are narrow lanes crowded with thick-walled Arab houses and mosques. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593 and now a National Monument, still stands guard over the Old Town. Mackinnon Market, Mombasa's municipal market place, offers a variety of coffees, teas, and spices sold in bulk. Their aromas permeate the air and add to the exotic atmosphere of this ethnically diverse city.
