THE GIRAFFE CENTER

WHAT IS THE GIRAFFE CENTRE ?
The giraffe centre situated in Nairobi’s Lang’ata suburb is the creation of a Kenya conservation organization, the Africa fund for endangered wildlife A.F.E.W. Kenya.
The purpose of giraffe centre is to educate Kenyan school children about their country’s wildlife and environment and to give visitors both local and international an opportunity to come into close contact with wild animals by feeding the words tallest species, the giraffe

A SHORT HISTORY:
A.F.E.W. Kenya was founded in 1979 by the late jock Leslie- Melvile a Kenyan citizen of British descent whose extraordinary vision about the need to create an educational institution in conjunction with rescuing the endangered Rothschild giraffe becoming world famous as s nature of education center.
The late Betty, jocks American born wife had earlier discovered the sad plight of the Rothschild giraffe-their only 120 left on an 18000.acre ranch in western Kenya that was scheduled for subdivision and resettlement. Their first effort to save this sub species was to bring the two younger giraffes to there property in Lang’ata. Then Betty founded A.F.E.W.U.S.A.
Funds were raised to move five groups to different areas. There are now over 300 giraffe- all safe and breeding well in different locations in Kenya. Funds raised via AFEW.USA also built the giraffe center and have about 60 acres, and is in the process of buying 40 more acres for our sanctuary.
THE GIRAFFE CENTER EDUCATION ACTIVITIES:
The staffs in our education development are highly motivated in their education activities, organizing workshop for children of all ages, together with teachers, on many diverse environmental subjects. Many visitors to the centre be thy young or old have little or no knowledge of their country’s extraordinary landscape and wildlife. We aim to people as animals in the environment by enlighten the practical benefits to people as animals in these times of population explosion and human encroachment.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS:
A.F.E.W.(K) ltd supports other conservation organizations including wildlife clubs in Kenya , friends of Nairobi national park, David Sheldrick animal orphanage, mount Kenya forest trust, friends of Tsavo national park, Ngong forest trust, Aberdare national park and youth for conservation amongst many others.
THE GIRAFFE CENTER NATURE TRAIL
A hundreds years ago, large tracks of dry tracks of dry uplands forest existed in the area known today as Nairobi. The variety of animals that made the animals forest their homes is extensive and includes giraffe, rhinos, buffalos, and even elephant .it is a sad fact that the forest is know decimated, and the animals are all gone. However in our sanctuary we have preserved the original forest for our giraffe, and have also kept the intact the habitat for many other animals that encounter during a walk down our natural trail. The fresh footprints of bushbuck, dikdik, giraffe and warthog will be evidence of the presence nearby. Our guides will give you a memorable walk in this wonderful Africa wilderness and you can enjoy the challenges of spotting some of the 178species of birds found in the area
